PacRim 2014 To Be Held In Bellingham, And It Is Going To Be Great

While our team heads off to lands charted under the Southern Cross to compete in PacRim 2012, it is hard to believe but it is time to start planning for PacRim 2014 that will be held here in Bellingham. While the exact dates have not been set, it is looking like late summer, early fall. Those dates present the best winds for an international contest such as PacRim.

But running the races of PacRim 2014 will only be a small part of what we, the community of Bellingham, will need to do. We will have hundreds of visitors, needs for home stay’s for nearly all of them, daily events for about 60-80 people to learn about Bellingham and our community, receptions and closing night celebrations for a few hundred each, as well as the daily logistics, in minute detail, of what will occur. In other words, this is a once in a 12 year event to showcase Bellingham, Whatcom County and our boating community.

As the 2012 Team representing Bellingham Sister Cities for this years PacRim Regatta are now in their final month of preparations, training is daily, practice is every minute, everyone’s minds are being fine tuned for the upcoming events in Port Stephens Australia. Port Stephens is this years host, and their official site can be accessed here, but short biographies of Team Bellingahm can be found here.

PacRim 2012 – Notice of Race

Port Stephens, Australia
March 17^th – 24^th, 2012

PacRim 2012 will be held in Port Stephens, Au and organized by Port Stephens according to existing Pacific Rim Yacht Challenge Charter which was established in the early days of PacRim and approved by both the Bellingham Sister Cities Organization and the Bellingham Yacht Club boards.

The dates for the 2012 PacRim Regatta are: March 17^th – March 24^th , 2012

Country applications are requested by August 1, 2011 with each participant fees of $250 au, payable by September 30^th, 2011

Yachts will be Hood 23’s (similar to Cal 20’s) and Etchells

It is suggested that we supply 3 crew members for each yacht, with a reserve sailor for those yachts with no owner rep.

A total of 20 persons will be selected (racers and ambassadors), with both the BSCA and BYC represented.

Membership in a Bellingham area Yacht Club required for racers; priority given to participation in the BYC.

Bellingham Sister Cities membership required for both racers and ambassadors upon selection.

Included in the $250au participant fee: Homestays during the scheduled event, many meals and activities in addition to racing.

Costs exceeding the participant fee of $250au will include personal airfare, approx. $300 per person for uniform costs and gifts for host family, boat insurance fees for racers (to be determined by PSYC), cost oftaking host families out for one dinner at as local Port Stephens restaurant.

Passports and Visas are required.

Applications: Applications are available for both Sailing Crew Member and Ambassador positions. Please use the appropriate one for your participation application.

PacRim 2010, Victoria, BC – June 6th-12th

The Bellingham Yacht Club and Bellingham Sister Cities have been formally invited to Victoria, BC, Canada for the “Pacific Rim Yacht Challenge 2010” on June 6th through June 12th, 2010.

We are allowed to send 20 people to Victoria. Travels arrangements and associated costs are participants’ responsibilities. There is a $200 event fee. Participants will be home-stayed for seven days and many meals and activities in addition to racing are included in the event fee. Team clothing is also usually purchased locally for this event, approximately $200 -$300. Traditionally, one night during the week, each participant treats his home stay hosts to dinner at a local Victoria restaurant and provides local themed gifts for home stay families. Another requirement is that each participant must also Become A Member of the Bellingham Sister Cities. The total cost a participant can expect to spend has normally been under $1,000.
